Bondurant Racing School

A couple of weeks ago, the G Luxe crew was out in Arizona at the Bondurant Racing School. The school is located on a 60 acre racing facility in Chandler, Arizona (not too far from Phoenix) and is stocked with a large fleet of GM cars including Corvette Coupes, Corvette Z06, Cadillac CTS and CTS-V, Pontiac Grand Prix GXP, and Pontiac GTO. In addition, they have a number of superkarts, including a six-speed shifter kart that can go from 0-100 mph in six seconds. The school offers a whole host of courses ranging from a one-day Intro to Racing, which we signed up for, all the way to a four-day Executive Protection/Anti-Kidnapping course for all of you wannabe commandos.

If you're a racing enthusiast, there is nothing more fun than learning to drive a high-performance sports car around a race track. If you think you're already the second-coming of Lewis Hamilton because you can out-drag that neighborhood MILF in the Lincoln Navigator, you'll be surprised how little you actually know about getting the most out of your vehicle.

We decided to start our racing adventure with a three-hour session on the shifter karts. To be clear, these aren't those lawn-mower engine karts that you find chugging around the parking lot at your local country fair. No my friends, these racing rockets are powered by a 38 horsepower Honda engine and can top out at 120 mph (38 horses is an amazing amount of power for a 200 lb vehicle). Imagine going almost twice the freeway speed limit just one inch off the asphalt. I guarantee that will get those butt-cheeks of yours clenched nice and tight. We spent the first hour learning about the karts and how to handle the basics like braking and shifting. The instructors then took us around the track showing us the proper lines to take and which gear to be in. After we were all fairly comfortable with the karts and the track layout, they turned us loose for lap after lap of pure racing bliss.

The next day started bright and early at 6:30AM in order to avoid as much of the brutal mid-day Arizona heat as possible. We were each provided with our own Corvette coupe for the day, which we used to go through various driving exercises. The first lesson of the day was learning how to perform a heel-toe shift which was mind-bogglingly difficult. We then hopped into a modified Cadillac CTS that was equipped with hydraulics on the rear and front ends of the car, which enabled it to simulate loss of traction. We each took turns learning how to get the car back on track after it starts going sideways (basically, how to avoid hitting pedestrians if you're driving too quickly in rain or snow). The rest of the day was filled with more driving exercises including a timed auto-cross, oval laps, and finally a lead and follow on the main track.

Probably the most thrilling part of the day was when our instructors took us out on "hot laps" around the track. It's quite amazing what a skilled driver can do with a street legal car. As we went barreling down the straightaway and into the corners, we had visions of flying through the air and cart-wheeling to our exciting but untimely deaths. But the world-class instructors managed the track with ease and we all lived to drive another day.

The G Luxe Crew agreed that our two days at Bondurant was one of the coolest things we've ever done. You'll never truly understand what your sports car can do until you drive one hard on a race-track. The most important thing that we took away from the course is the confidence that, if necessary, we can drive our cars to the edge and still stay in control. My biggest problem was when I got back home and had to fight the urge to replicate some of the things I did on the race track.

Courses at the Bondurant Racing School aren't cheap ranging from a few hundred bucks for the superkarts to a few thousand dollars for the multi-day sessions. But if you've got that inner Speed Racer that's just dying to come out, it will be money well spent. Go to bondurant.com to learn more.

New tagline

After months of harassment, G Luxe Crew Member Tandori has convinced us to remove "frugal" from our tag line since, in truth, we're not really frugal. In fact, we're strong believers in frivolous spending (recession be damned). While our motto has changed (rich, sexy, indulgent), our mission to find bargains and reviews on all things luxurious has not. Reviews will be posted in the main section and deals will be added in a new section called Luxe Deals on the right-hand panel. As always, your feedback will be much appreciated.

Tiger Killer?

world golf tour
No, we're not talking about Tiger's bad knee that's going to make the PGA tour as popular as pro bowling over the next few months, but rather a new online golf game called World Golf Tour that will try to dethrone the king of golf games: EA's Tiger Woods golf. WGT was founded by a couple of dudes who had sold their previous game company for $90 million a few years back and wondered why there weren't any good online golf games. With proceeds from their sale (amazing what you can do with a few tens of millions laying around) and some venture backing, they set out to great a "2 1/2 D", Flash-based online golf game that strives for true realism. Golfers will be able to create their own avatars, determine where to place the ball, select which club to use, and even manage the spin of the ball.

Since EA has a lock on the PGA license, WGT is getting around this road block by working directly with top golf courses. Their team of designers and engineers meticulously replicate each course using aerial photography and GPS technology. What we're most intrigued by is their revenue model which seeks to provide free game play through product placements, advertisements, and partnerships with television and tournaments. We think (and hope) that more gaming companies will embrace this distribution model. In addition, WGT will embrace social networking which they hope will lead to the stickiness of their game by enabling players to create online profiles, post tips, and share videos of their best shots.

The complete version of World Golf Tour is expected to launch in late summer but you can try out their demo now at worldgolftour.com. We found the graphics fairly on par with the latest gen games and the swing mechanism is fairly easy to use. Only time will tell if WGT will pull a Rocco on Tiger or simply be relegated to the driving range.

Rich people agree, Porsche rules

The Luxury Institute (yes there is such a thing) recently polled the top 10 percent earners in the US with an average income of $349,000 and average net worth of $3.7 million, and asked them to rank car-makers based on their perceived status. Coming in at numero uno is our beloved Porsche brand. Rounding out the list is Lexus and Mercedes Benz. We were curious to see if Tata Motors beat out Ford and GM.

Luxe of the Day: W Hotel Maldives

w hotels maldives
Whenever G Luxe Crew Member Tandori needs a little R&R, he heads over to the tropical paradise that is the Maldives. Situated in the Indian Ocean, the Maldive Islands is a series of 26 atolls and 1,192 islets that is a favorite destination of many Asian and European jet setters when they're looking for a little chillaxation (Tandori's favorite word/concept).

The next time Tandori decides to vacation in the Maldives, we suggest he check out the W Hotel Maldives. Most of you know the W Hotel as that uber-trendy hotel chain that helped kick-off the renaissance of the boutique hotels. They have taken that chic trendiness and transplanted it to their own private island. Dining options are plentiful with three restaurants to offer a variety of seafood and island dishes. If you start getting a little island fever, head over to 15 below for a little night-club action. And like all W Hotels, you'll have access to their Whenever Wherever service.

OpenSkies, JFK to Paris for $1440

openskies airlines
With the demise of essentially all of the business-class only transatlantic airlines such as Silver Jet and EOS Airlines, we're crossing our fingers that the new OpenSkies airline by British Airways will be able to offer something comparable. Designed primarily for the well-heeled traveler - only 30 of the expected 82 seats to of the coach variety with the remaining split between Business and Premium Economy - OpenSkies is set to start offering flights starting on June 19. The airline's name refers to the Open Skies agreement struck between the US and EU that permits airlines to fly to and from the US to continental Europe.

Luxe of the Day: Virgin Charter

virgin charter
With the disastrous state of the major US airlines, it's no wonder that there has been a boom in alternative forms of air travel. While the uber-rich amongst us will opt to purchase his or her own private Gulf Stream, those with only a seven-figure net worth may want to consider a service like Virgin Charter.

A result of a partnership between Sir Branson and some tech entrepreneur dude named Scott Duffy (we have no idea who is), Virgin Charter is an online marketplace where you can buy travel time from charter operators without the up-front cost of fractional ownership or having to join a membership program. To purchase a trip, you go to their web site and post your trip request, then find an aircraft and negotiate the price, all online. The only additional cost to you is a small service fee once you book your flight.

All the aircrafts listed on Virgin Charter are operated by federally-licensed carriers who have the appropriate FAA-certifications, so you can be sure you won't be pulling a Richie Valens on your boondoggle to Miami. We found a hole host of planes on their site ranging from turbo props to heavy jets.

If you want to go live out your own rap video experience, got to virgincharter.com.

Camitz Vodka

camitz vodka
A few weeks ago, we wrote about O2 sparkling vodka. Well it looks like the whole bubbly vodka concept has caught on with the newest entrant being Camitz Sparkling Vodka. So what's the gimmick with this particular spirit? Well first, it comes with a champagne stopper, and second, the water is made from the underground springs of some place in Sweden we've never heard of and the grains from fields of another place in Sweden we can't even pronounce. Go to The Strong Buzz if you want to read how it drinks since we haven't tried it. Bottles will be available in New York, Florida, Nevada, and California for $45 per bottle.

For those who don't know about Bullrun, it's a week-long, cross-country, cannonball-style race started in 2004 that's catered to the "luxury lifestyle". This year's race will take place on June 20-27 and will start in Calgary and end in Phoenix with stops along the way for outrageous parties. Bullrun is an invite-only event that attracts both the rich and famous (and drop-dead gorgeous women who love expensive cars and the men who drive them). The entrance fee is $20K and it covers both drivers for accommodations, rally entry and meals and parties for the week of the rally. That my friends, is money well-spent. Luxe of the Day: Porsche Sport Driving School

porsche sport driving school
One of the frustrations of having a high-performance car is the inability to drive the thing to it's fullest potential. Unless you're one of those moron street-racers that risk the life and limb of everyone else on the freeway, your only opportunity to drive the wheels off your car is on a race-track. If you're a Porsche fanatic like we are, the Porsche Sport Driving School is the perfect place to unleash your inner Andretti. Located at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, the driving school is staffed with world-class instructors who have significant race experience on tracks including Indy, LeMans, and Daytona.

Each participant will be assigned a current model year 911 Carrera and will spend 20 percent of the time in the classroom learning proper driving techniques and the remaining 80 percent on the track, culminating in lapping sessions on the Grand Prix circuit. Courses range from $1795 for one-day course to $5295 for a three-day race licensing course. Go to porschedriving.com to learn more.

P.S. If you're wondering whether we've attended or plan on attending the driving school, the answer is no. Why? Two words: Birmingham, Alabama.

BRAND Steakhouse, Las Vegas

brand steakhouse and lounge monte carlo hotel
Ok admittedly, we don't consider the Monte Carlo hotel in Las Vegas to be really up to G Luxe standards, however, we're tempted to check it out after reading about BRAND Steakhouse & Lounge located in the hotel. What makes this steakhouse so special? Three words: The Ultimate Steak. Its an 8.6 pound (yes, that's correct, 8.6 LBS) porterhouse. There is also the $500 Ultimate Surf & Turf which we assume is for you to share with the boys since it consists of 120 ounces of porterhouse, side dishes, and your choice of King Crab, Jumbo Shrimp Scampi, or Maine Lobster Tail Thermidor.

G Luxe Crew, you know where were dining for our next Vegas run.

Luxe of the Day: Hello Kitty Bling

Guys, we apologize in advance if you end up spending thousands of dollars on Hello Kitty jewelry. Today's post is for G Luxe friend Linda W. whose birthday is coming up soon. While most of you know Hello Kitty as that cute little feline cartoon character that is popular among the Asian female population, some (including us) consider him (or her, we really have no idea on the sex of the cat) the most evil power in the World.

That other evil feline, Kimora Lee Simmons, has created a line of blinged-out Hello Kitty jewelry including pendants, rings, and watches. These things aren't cheap running from a few hundred dollars to over four grand for a diamond crusted Hello Kitty necklace. We think you can do just as well and for a lot less by going to Chinatown and purchasing a knock-off Hello Kitty pendant and super-gluing a bunch of flea market diamonds on it. If you insist on the original, you can purchase at Neiman Marcus or try renting it at Bag, Borrow or Steal.

Luxe of the Day: United First Class Premium Suites

united first class premium suites
Last week, we posted on the ultra-premium First Class suites on Singapore Airlines. While you can consider that the Bentley of air travel, today's post on United's upcoming First Class suite is more like a Buick. The S-shaped cabins is designed to give passengers more privacy and the seat reclines into a fully flat bed. Other amenities include iPod connectivity, large video monitor and drawers. Ho hum. The new First Class suite will be introduced on selected international routes during 2008 and 2009.

As a United Premier Executive member, I've been on my fair share of United First Class flights. My feeling is that while you can make the cabin more luxurious, you still won't have a first-rate First Class experience until you replace the surly "Grandmas of United" aka United stewardesses. Unfortunately, I doubt that will happen any time soon.
