Just when I was just starting to consider signing up for an American Express Platinum Card (the vaunted Black Card is still beyond my grasp), I find out that they've cut out one of the valuable perks. Webflyer.com recently reported that American Express will no longer be offering four complimentary companion tickets on qualifying domestic coach tickets. Companion tickets will still be offered for qualifying international first and business class tickets, but honestly, how often will you be buying those hefty tickets. While you'll still get other cool perks including concierge service and airport lounge access, the value proposition is just not the same considering the $450 annual fee. Damn recession.

actually I use my Platinum card more often for flying Biz/First/Upper class internationally. Due to my height (6'4") I don't want to be squashed in the back; and it's rather amazing the # of points/miles you get by moving up. I use my points/miles as quickly I gather them, for fear that said airline will go bankrupt and void my miles.
Thanks Clarke. I'm with ya. I get real antsy flying past 4-5 hours so I always fly first when I do go overseas. It would have been nice for AMEX to keep their companion pass for domestic flights though.
